Business Transition: what season are you in?
Why do I like to compare Business to Nature: because like nature, our business is always transiting a season. Whether we are starting, growing, pivoting, restructuring, implementing, closing, adding, relocating we are in a season. I even feel like quoting Buddhists about the impermanence of things. It’s evolving and changing. It’s happening…
How do we experience those seasons, will make a difference for us as CEO, entrepreneur and leaders. How can we clarify the unique demands, lessons, and opportunities within each season. Understanding these dynamics can empower you to lead with intention, clarity and acceptance while escaping comparison or judgement.
Contrary to nature, the seasons in business don’t follow fixed lengths and can coexist within different areas of focus. Take a moment to reflect: What season is your business in today? Are you planting seeds for the future, harvesting the rewards of hard work, or pausing to recalibrate? Whatever the season, lean into it with purpose. Seasons change, but each transition brings new potential for growth and impact.
Spring, it’s the time of fresh starts. It represents new ideas, innovations, and opportunities. We sow seeds for the future. It’s time for creativity, taking calculated risks. And one of the common mistakes is to be impatient, spring requires patience and time. Like flowers or buds, one day there is nothing and the following day the tree is blossoming. When we feel nothing is happening, something is. It’s just not visible to our eyes though. And that’s when doubts rise and conduct to irrational actions. The mind questions our decisions because the feeling of discomfort is too massive to tolerate.
It doesn’t mean that all of your business is in springtime, you might have other services or products blooming. If you are a brand-new entrepreneur starting your business, things might be still in the nurturing phase, but spring is only a season. It’s the time to be curious and cultivate optimism and gather the tools you and your teams might need to thrive in the future.
When your products or services are in the growth phase, and your business is solidifying its presence in the market, it’s really time to focus on leadership by celebrating the wins, keeping morale high and at the same time stay vigilant to preserve your team and yourself. The vision of the business need to remain clear to avoid any rash decisions, and optimization can take place while maintaining quality and efficient processes.
If your services are in this phase and you have others new ideas coming up that are in the previous phase, it can sometimes be hard to juggle with all of that. It requires us to accept the uncertainty of what will happen to the part in the air and accept the risks.
Because when you reap the rewards of the hard and consistent work, there will be reflection on the lessons learned, the choices. All this consolidation will drive the next decisions to be made for the future. This is also the time for celebration with the team, partners, customers and to express gratitude. The financial metrics might be good or excellent for the services in place for a while but could be just acceptable for the new ones. Growth will continue for the last one eventually.
The phase we rarely like in business, but that is necessary, is the resting one, the planning. It might come with restructuring, pivoting decisions, relocation, and if necessary refine the vision. This introspection might be uncomfortable but it’s a stepstone for decisive actions, realigning with your values, letting go of services. This phase is as vital as the action phase.
As a leader, your ability to identify and accept the season your business is transitioning into is a game-changer. To lead yourself and the team with awareness and adaptability is key. The two additional pillars to sustain in business are emotional mastery as we can go through so many different aspects and soul care by allowing time for you and with your loved ones. Because at the end, life is all about fulfillment on all aspects
